Request of Paraguay to include chess to the Olympic Games Programme

The FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov continues his working visit to Asuncion, Paraguay.

There he met the chess players of Paraguay. One of them is Guillermo Vazquez Colman, he is two-folded Champion of the country although he is only 14 years old and has been playing chess only for four years! The FIDE President handed him the FIDE Master Certificate and invited to participate in the Moscow Open tournament as well as to be trained by the Russian chess specialists.

Then Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited one of the gymnasiums of Asuncion where 800 students have got chess lessons. FIDE President played chess with one of the strongest chess players of the gymnasium and ... lost the game!

Later the President had a working meeting in the National Olympic Committee of Paraguay. Mr. Camilo Perez Lopez Moreira, President of Paraguayan NOC has signed a letter to Mr. Rogge with a request to change the Charter of the International Olympic Committee and to include chess to the Winter Olympic Games Programme.

An agreement between FIDE, Paraguay Chess Federation and Ministry of Education and Culture of Paraguay has been signed during the visit of the FIDE President to this country. President of Paraguayan chess federation and Vice Minister of Education Development of Paraguay were present at the meeting.

2nd Copa Latinoamericana de Ajedrez Started

The 2nd Copa Latinoamericana de Ajedrez has started at the Torre de las Comunicaciones in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Championship is organized by the Uruguay Chess Federation and will be played from 1st to 6th November over nine rounds of Accelerated Swiss system.

The tournament has massive participation, with 227 players from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Among them are 19 Grandmasters, 13 International Masters and 19 FIDE Masters.

Most of the top seeded players scored victories in the first round, but Gustavo Montoro (2027) and Rodrigo Ibanez (1978) split points with Grandmasters Eduardo Iturrizaga and Oswaldo Zambrana, respectively.

The 1st Latin America Cup was played in 2010 in the ancient city of Cusco, Peru, under the sponsorship of the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. Winner was Colombian GM Neuris Delgado.

The FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov arrived in Montevideo to attend the opening ceremony of the 2nd edition of the Latin American Cup. This year this event with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov as its main sponsor, has gathered nearly 240 players from 12 Latin American countries. During his visit to Uruguay, the FIDE President has also met with the representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. He also called on the Mayor of Montevideo Mrs. Ana Olivera and visited a local elementary school. All his meetings had as the main issue on the Agenda possibilities of introducing chess into school curriculum. The framework Agreement between FIDE, Uruguay Chess Federation and Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay has been signed during the visit of the FIDE President to this country. Top seeded is GM Lazaro Bruzon from Cuba, who recently played in good shape at the World Chess Cup. Eduardo Iturrizaga is back in action, after missing the Magistral Casino de Barcelona due to car accident.

Top Argentina players are also competing, while Peru is represented by the Cori siblings. Deysi T Cori is the reigning World Junior Girls Champion.
