Armenian designated head coach of Russian Men’s National Chess Team

MOSCOW. – By decision of the Chess Federation of Russia, the Women’s National Team Head Coach Yury Dokhoyan is appointed head coach of the Men’s team, ITAR-TASS News Agency reported.

In the words of Federation’s Vice President Sergey Smagin, the result of Dokhoyan’s work will be the Russian national squad’s performance at the 2012 World Olympiad.

Grandmaster Yury Dokhoyan was the coach and the second of 13th World Chess Champion, Garry Kasparov, for many years.

And in the past three years under Dokhoyan’s coaching, Russia’s Women’s National Chess Team captured several international championship titles.

Reigning world champions Armenia are close to adding the European title to their collection of remarkable achievements in chess after outstripping current holder and arch-foe Azerbaijan in the penultimate round of championship play on Thursday.

FIDE’s current No. 3 player Levon Aronian and company need a victory in the ninth and final round of the ending tournament in Greece to finish first among 38 competing nations.

The Armenians scored a signal 3-1 victory against the Dutch team to rise to 13 points in team standings, a point ahead of Azerbaijan that inadvertently helped the Armenia cause by losing to Germany 1.5-2.5. Germany are second despite 13 points, yielding to Armenia on overall games statistics.

In the women’s section Armenia rose to 10 points and sixth place after beating Serbia 2.5-1.5. Russia is leader with 15 points.

Chess: Armenia’s Aronian maintains third position on FIDE rating list

Armenia’s top grandmaster Levon Aronian has maintained his third place standing among the world’s best chess players in the latest rating released by the game’s international governing body FIDE.

The November 1, 2011 Top 100 players list (released every second month) shows Aronian with a rating of 2802 and trailing Norway’s Magnus Carlsen (rating 2826) and India’s Viswanathan Anand (rating 2811).

The latest Top 100 player rankings of FIDE (www.fide.com) also include Armenian grandmasters Sergei Movsesian (position 34; rating 2710), Vladimir Akopian (position 63; raiting 2681) and Gabriel Sargissian (position 73; rating 2671).

The FIDE Top 100 female players list includes three Armenian grandmasters. The highest rank among them is held by Elina Danielian (position 16; rating 2507), followed by Lilit Mkrtchyan (in 29th place, rating 2469) and Lilit Galojan (in 78th place; rating 2383). Hungary’s Judit Polgar tops the rankings with a rating of 2710.

In the list of 145 chess nations ranked by the average rating of their top 10 players Armenia is 6th (average rating 2655; has 33 grandmasters and 21 international masters; ‘total titled’ – 80).

The FIDE nations rating list is topped by Russia (2747), followed by Ukraine (2695) and France (2659).

Armenia captures silver at World Youth Chess Olympiad

KOCAELI. – Armenia’s national team won silver medal at World Youth Under 16 Chess Olympiad, which is being held in Kocaeli, Turkey.

At the final round, Armenia defeated Kyrgyzstan, tallied 28.5 points, and remained a mere 0.5 points behind the leader, Russia, which defeated the Czech Republic.

Iran was also in contention for second place, and, had it defeated Kazakhstan 4-0, it would have taken the silver medal away from Armenia, but the Iranians defeated the Kazakhs 3-1, received 27.5 points, in total, and thus remained third.

Armenia’s under-sixteen national chess squad comprises Karen Grigoryan, Hovhannes Gabuzyan, Tigran Harutyunyan, Arman Mikealyan, and Zohrak Apresyan. The team’s head coach is Arsen Yeghiazaryan.
